PLANTATION FARMS
Plantation farms is a process in which single crop is grown in large area. Plantation farming is a blend of agriculture and industry. This farming requires large area, more labor to work and large transportation. Plantation farming is majorly confined within the tropical areas on both sides of the equator and it can exist on every such continent which possesses a tropical type of climate.
In Telangana plantation farms are grown in 50 thousand acres, on average every year 6.5 lakhs metric tons wood is produced. On an average based on quality one acre produces 13 metric tons of wood.
Plantation Farming impact on Economy:
- It has led to the development of infrastructure such as roads, schools, colleges, housing bodies, administrative organizations and hospitals, etc., leading to ‘urbanization’.
- Plantation farming employs a huge number of workers which has improved the standard of living and it also reduces the growing unemployment problem.
- They increase the tax base for the government system in increasing the revenue used for developing roads.
- Plantation farming is totally export oriented, so the net volume and the national export value increases which adds value to the foreign exchequer.
Bamboo: Telangana has planted four species at the Bamboo Demonstration Farm at Mudgal in Adilabad District. Bamboo has the potential to add value to the business of small and marginal farmers, who constituted about 80 per cent of the farmer’s in the State. One-acre produces 13.5 tons of the yield and Rupees 40000.
Eucalyptus: UKPL’s agro forestry program is currently operating in several districts in the states of Maharashtra, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana. So far more than 50,000 hectares of trees have been planted, benefiting more than 60,000 farmers. One acre land yields Rupees 5 Lakhs profits in return.
Malabar Neem: Malabar Neem has the unique feature of growing to 40 feet within 2 years from planting and can be mechanically pruned and harvested. This crop yields profit of around Rupees 30 Lakhs per acre.
